Frequently Asked Questions
About SurfLoch
SurfLoch is a global leader in surf pool technology, developing pneumatic wave generation systems that create natural, ocean-like waves for surf parks, resorts, and private clients worldwide.
SurfLoch was founded by Tom Lochtefeld, the inventor of the FlowRider and a pioneer in artificial wave technology with over 30 years of experience in surf innovation. SurfLoch is still operated as a family business to this day.
SurfLoch is headquartered in California, with projects and partners around the world, including Europe, Asia-Pacific, and North America.About SurfLoch
Technology & Performance
SurfLoch uses a patented pneumatic system that both pushes and pulls air to create pressure differentials in the pool, forming powerful, natural-feeling waves that can be adjusted for size, shape, and frequency.
Unlike mechanical or plunger systems, SurfLoch’s technology delivers consistent, ocean-quality waves with greater flexibility, scalability, and energy efficiency – with no mechanical parts in the water. True power in the wave is also a trademark of SurfLoch, with the Flagship WaveBender pool, that actually bends the wave towards the surfer, with unmatched power.
Yes — wave type, size, shape, and frequency can be fully programmed and adjusted in real time, allowing beginner to expert conditions at the push of a button, wave by wave.
Wave heights typically range from 1–7 feet (0.3–2.1 meters), depending on pool size, configuration, and intended use (leisure, training, competition, etc.).
Projects & Implementation
SurfLoch offers scalable pool designs – from compact private pools (for homes, hotels, or small developments) to full-scale surf parks accommodating hundreds of surfers daily.
Build times vary by scale but generally range from 12 to 24 months, including design, engineering, permitting, and construction phases.
Costs depend on size, location, and project goals. SurfLoch provides feasibility studies and tailored proposals to suit each development.
Pools require standard civil, mechanical, and electrical infrastructure. SurfLoch collaborates with local contractors and engineering teams to integrate systems efficiently.
Sustainability
SurfLoch’s pneumatic system uses compressed air rather than hydraulics or heavy mechanical systems, reducing energy use and maintenance. The system can also integrate with renewable power sources.
Water usage is similar to other large recreational bodies (like resort pools or lakes) and less than an 18 hole Golf Course. The system uses closed-loop filtration and can use freshwater, saltwater, or brackish water with on site treatment.
Surf Experience
Absolutely – SurfLoch’s pools can produce competition-grade waves and are adaptable for training, contests, and surf education programs. More so, the waves can evolve through heats to provide a more oceanlike contest environment.
SurfLoch is able to mimic waves from around the world, in part of more pending the pool design. From point breaks and beach breaks to barreling reef-style waves, SurfLoch can recreate a wide range of natural surf conditions in one pool.
Absolutely. Waves can be tuned for any skill level, making the experience safe and enjoyable for first-time surfers as well as professionals.
